Information About Mentoring

The Main Objective of the Program

The main objective of Arts Network is to help to build an encouraging and supportive learning environment and sense of identity and belonging for all students in the Faculty of Arts, especially for incoming first year students. In working towards achieving our primary objective, we might just happen to have a bit of fun along the way too ;-)

Training Sessions – what’s involved?

There will be two half-day training sessions to attend. The training program has been completely revised this year (thanks to fabulous feedback from our past mentors!).

At our first training session you will learn some simple but effective skills that will help you to establish a good relationship with the first year students in your group; the focus here will be on developing your interpersonal skills. We're delighted that some of our past mentors will be there to offer some words of wisdom, and share their experiences with you. We’ll also give you some very practical information about the program.

Our second face-to-face training session will take place on Saturday 23 February 2008. During this training we will make all the final arrangements for Arty Starty Day (held on Monday 25 February); this is where you’ll find out exactly where to go and what to do on the day.

Don't forget that there are also two online training activities for Mentors. The second of these is now available on our WebCT site and must be completed by Thursday 14 February.

Can’t make one of the training sessions?

If it turns out to be absolutely impossible for you to come to one of our training sessions (because of illness or some other serious factor beyond your control), you may still be able to participate in the program in a supporting role. Let’s hope the problem doesn’t arise but, if it does, you must let us know by sending an email to artsnetwork@arts.usyd.edu.au, and we’ll discuss the possibilities.
